Risk Warning

Capital is at risk in full on every P2P lending platform listed on this site. No compensation scheme covers borrower defaults. Advertised returns are targets, not guarantees.

Read this page in full before investing through any platform listed on crowdhive-reviews.com. P2P lending is not covered by the deposit guarantee schemes that protect savings accounts in the European Economic Area. You can lose part or all of the capital you invest.

Capital Loss Risk

When you lend money through a P2P lending platform, you are exposed to credit risk on every loan in your portfolio. If a borrower defaults and the loan cannot be recovered, you lose the outstanding principal on that loan. No compensation scheme covers borrower defaults on any of the 19 platforms tracked by this site, regardless of whether the platform holds a MiFID II licence, an ECSP licence or no licence at all.

Platforms that offer a buyback guarantee commit to repurchase certain loans if a borrower payment is late beyond a stated threshold - typically 60 days. The buyback guarantee is a contractual promise from the originating lender or the platform itself, not a regulated insurance product. If the entity behind the guarantee runs out of capital or ceases operations, the guarantee becomes worthless and you bear the full credit loss.

Advertised Returns Are Targets

Target return ranges published by platforms reflect the interest rates on loans available at the time of publication, minus estimated defaults and fees. They are not guaranteed outcomes. Your realised return depends on how many borrowers in your actual portfolio default, how much is recovered in collections, how long your capital is locked in non-performing loans, and how frequently you can reinvest idle cash.

Platforms that do not publish a consistent target return range score 0/10 on the return transparency criterion in this site's rating method. A missing published return does not necessarily mean the platform is riskier, but it does mean you have less data to compare expected outcomes.

Platform Failure Risk

P2P lending platforms can and do fail. Historical examples include Kuetzal (Switzerland, 2020), Envestio (Latvia, 2020) and multiple smaller platforms that ceased operations with investor capital still outstanding. A platform failure does not automatically mean your loans disappear, but it often means you lose access to a secondary market, lose the ability to reinvest, and face significant delays or full loss if the platform held client funds in a way that mixed them with operational accounts.

Platforms regulated under MiFID II or ECSP are required to segregate client funds and are subject to periodic supervision, but this does not eliminate platform failure risk. It reduces certain operational risks and may improve your position in an insolvency scenario, but it does not protect you from borrower defaults or guarantee you will recover your capital if the platform closes.

Liquidity and Lock-Up Risk

Most P2P loans have fixed terms ranging from a few months to several years. If a platform does not offer a secondary market, you cannot exit your position before the loan matures unless you forfeit your claim or negotiate a private sale outside the platform. Even on platforms with a secondary market, liquidity is not guaranteed - you may wait days or weeks to sell a loan, and you may have to offer a discount to attract a buyer.

During periods of market stress or platform-specific trouble, secondary market liquidity can evaporate entirely. Investors who need their capital on short notice should not allocate a material portion of their savings to P2P lending.

Tax Responsibility

Interest income from P2P lending is taxable in most European jurisdictions. The exact rate, reporting threshold and payment schedule vary by country and sometimes by platform jurisdiction. This site does not provide tax advice and does not calculate withholding or personal tax liabilities. Verify your own tax obligations with a licensed tax adviser or your local tax authority before investing.
